Investigators of corruption by Sen. Menendez are now focusing on his wife

The Daily Caller reports that the federal agents who are investigating corruption allegations against Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) are now focusing on Menendez's wife, Nadine Arslanian.

It was in late October that reports emerged indicating that Menendez was, once again, being investigated for corruption.

Menedez was also federally investigated for corruption in 2015. The allegation there, which led to an indictment, was that Menendez had an arrangement with a Florida eye doctor, named Salomon Melgen, in which Melgen would provide private jet flights and vacations to Menendez in exchange for government contracts and other favors from the senator.

Menendez, here, escaped legal punishment after the jury failed to reach a unanimous decision. And, prosecutors decided, in 2018, not to retry the case.

There, however, is a "new" federal investigation into Menendez, which apparently has been ongoing since at least 2019. It appears that it runs along the same lines as the previous one.

Semafor initially reported:

The two people familiar with the investigation, one who is directly connected to the investigation and the other a New Jersey lawyer who has been told of the case, said that the broad outlines of the new inquiry are similar to the 2017 case. Both said that the new investigation involves an entirely different group of people, however.

The investigation is being led by the U.S. Attorney's Office in Manhattan, New York. Prosecutors are said to be contacting people connected with Menendez.

The latest news is that prosecutors appear to be targeting Menendez's wife. Reports indicate that subpoenas have been issued to associates of Arslanian.

We don't know exactly who has been subpoenaed or what information prosecutors are looking for. We only know that the subpoenas seek information related to Menendez and Arslanian.

Menendez continues to rely on the initial statement about the matter that was made by his advisor Michael Soliman a couple of weeks ago after the investigation was first announced.

"Senator Menendez is aware of an investigation that was reported today," Soliman said. "However, he does not know the scope of the investigation."

"As always," Soliman added, "should any official inquiries be made, the senator is available to provide any assistance that is requested of him or his office."
