The senate of Indiana just passed a piece of legislation that would make the overwhelming majority of abortions illegal, Fox News reports.
The legislation is known as Indiana’s Senate Bill 1.
The bill would make it illegal for a woman to receive an abortion once a fertilized egg implants in a uterus. The bill, however, does provide various exceptions.
One exception is for when the mother’s life is at risk. Another exception is made for cases of rape or incest. Here, though, the woman seeking an exception would have to sign a notarized affidavit attesting to the fact that the rape or incest actually took place.
After much debate, this bill passed the Indiana senate on Saturday by a vote of 26 to 20. The state’s upper chamber is currently controlled by Republicans, but 10 Republicans actually voted with their Democrat colleagues against the bill.
One of these Republicans is Indiana Sen. Vaneta Becker (R). Explaining her decision, she said:
Women deserve to have us protect their lives and free will. Senate Bill 1 destroys both. Shame on us for doing this. We are considering dictating medical decisions with blinders and ignorant of the astounding, unintended consequences we are creating
Nonetheless, the bill will be heading to Indiana’s House, which is also controlled by Republicans. It is expected that the state House will take the bill up in the coming weeks.
All things considered, it looks likely that the bill could make it to the governor’s desk and be signed into law.
Senate Bill 1 being enshrined in Indiana law would be a huge win for life.
