Incoming New York Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul said on Wednesday she would not rule out pardoning resigning New York Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo if he experiences criminal charges.

Cuomo resigned during a press conference on Tuesday, effective in 14 days. Hochul’s remarks came the following day.
Cuomo’s resignation followed the findings of an investigation that revealed the governor’s actions involving sexual harassment with 11 women, including during his time as governor.
Hochul also said she and Cuomo “have not been close” and says “no one” will describe her work environment as “toxic” when her term is done.

The change will be welcomed by several New Yorkers who believe Cuomo disgraced his position as leader of the state. Hochul’s role, however, remains unproven and will offer a new opportunity to lead in the aftermath of Cuomo’s scandals.
