Illinois judge shuts down Chicago mayor Lori Lightfoot’s Covid-19 vaccine mandate, sets stage for higher courts to intervene

The men and women who risk their lives to protect America’s cities are under assault from politicians. However, one of those weapons may have just been defused in Chicago.

An Illinois judge has temporarily blocked Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s COVID-19 mandate for Chicago police, Breitbart reported. Until arguments from Chicago’s Fraternal Order of Police union are heard in arbitration, the city can’t fire officers for refusing the vaccine.

Cook County Judge Raymond Mitchell handed down the decision Monday. Though they can’t be fired, officers who fail to comply may still place be placed on leave without pay in the meantime. “We’re simply asking this judge to force the city to stop their policy, put officers back to work, and force the city to go back to the bargaining table and arbitration,” John Catanzare Jr., the union’s president, explained.

Lightfoot did not take this decision as anything but a minor setback to her crusade to strongarm first responders. “If you look at what’s happening in court cases all across the country, whether it’s fire and police or others that are challenging these mandates, I’m not aware of a single instance in which a mandate put in place has been invalidated,” the Democratic mayor said after the decision was announced.

In the past, Lightfoot has made hysterical statements about vaccine hesitancy in the ranks. “The people that are not vaccinated are playing Russian roulette with their lives and they are playing Russian roulette with their families, their neighborhoods, and the people in this city who have a right to believe that when someone shows up from city government to their door, they are there to help them and save their live and not imperil it,” she claimed.

Leftist utopias like Los Angeles and New York City have similarly implemented mandates for first responders that may have many walking off the job — and with grave consequences. “The staffing just is not there; there’s no way to do it,”  New York City’s firefighters’ union boss Andrew Ansbro said of Mayor Bill de Blasio’s jab mandate. “The response times are going to go through the roof. We’re just not going to be able to get to the emergencies in time.”

It wasn’t enough that politicians spent the better part of the pandemic railing about systemic racism among the police and offering horrible solutions like defunding or disbanding departments. As if morale weren’t already low enough, leftists like Lightfoot are now looking to put the final nail in the coffin of city safety — but at least there’s a fighting chance for them with this recent ruling.
