According to a new report from the Washington Examiner, the "senior political appointee" whom the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) whistleblower alleges lied to Congress is none other than U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland. 

Per the Examiner: 

A source familiar with the whistleblower letter confirmed to the Washington Examiner on Thursday that Garland is the unnamed senior Biden official whose testimony before Congress is being challenged.

The whistleblower letter was sent to committees in the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives this past week by Mark Lytle, the attorney who is representing the whistleblower.

Thus far, the whistleblower is only being identified as a career IRS criminal supervisory special agent who has been supervising "the ongoing and sensitive investigation" of a “high-profile” and “controversial subject” since early 2020.

The information provided has been sufficient to draw the inference that the investigation being referred to is the federal investigation into Hunter Biden's business and tax affairs.

The whistleblower, in the letter provided to Congress by Lytle, made a number of allegations about the investigation. The main thrust of the allegations, however, is that the investigation has been corrupted in various ways.

The Daily Wire provides an overview of the allegations:

Disclosures made to the government watchdogs “contradict sworn testimony to Congress by a senior political appointee,” “involve failure to mitigate clear conflicts of interest in the ultimate disposition of the case,” and “detail examples of preferential treatment and politics improperly infecting decisions and protocols that would normally be followed by career law enforcement professionals in similar circumstances if the subject were not politically connected,” according to the letter.

Now, the Examiner has identified Garland as the "senior political appointee" whose provided faulty sworn testimony to Congress.

As for what Garland lied about, according to the Examiner, it likely has to do with the testimony that he provided to Congress in March about the Hunter Biden investigation.

During that testimony, Garland, according to the Examiner, "insisted to Congress . . . that the investigation was free from political interference and said the attorney in charge had full autonomy."

If what the whistleblower alleges is true, however, then it would appear that Garland simply lied to Congress.

It remains to be seen how this is all going to play out.

In the meantime, the White House is attempting to push back against the whistleblower's claims.

On Thursday, White House spokesman Ian Sams claimed:

Since he took office and consistent with his campaign promise that he would restore the independence of the Justice Department when it comes to decision-making in criminal investigations, President Biden has made clear that this matter would be handled independently by the Justice Department, under the leadership of a U.S. attorney appointed by former President Trump, free from any political interference by the White House. He has upheld that commitment.
