House Republicans officially launch investigation into Joe Biden's mishandling of classified documents

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan has launched a probe into President Joe Biden's mishandling of classified documents, Breitbart reported. The Ohio Republican made the announcement in a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland Friday.

Jordan's investigation comes on the heels of similar moves from the Department of Justice and the House Oversight Committee led by Rep. James Comer. In their letter to Garland, Jordan and Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) demanded "cooperation" during the inquiry.

"On January 12, 2023, you appointed Robert Hur as Special Counsel to investigate these matters," the lawmakers wrote. "The circumstances of this appointment raise fundamental oversight questions that the Committee routinely examines."

"We expect your complete cooperation with our inquiry," Jordan and Johnson demanded. The letter went on to question the lag between the first discovery of the documents and the DOJ's inquiry.

The lawmakers pointed out that on Nov. 2, classified documents were discovered at an office Biden occupied following his time as vice president. Despite this discovery coming "days before the midterm elections," no action was taken until this week.

Some of what was included in the trove were "intelligence memos and briefing materials that covered topics including Ukraine, Iran and the United Kingdom." The letter also noted that they dated from 2013, meaning they were potentially kicking around for nearly a decade.

"It is unclear when the Department first came to learn about the existence of these documents, and whether it actively concealed this information from the public on the eve of the 2022 elections," the letter said. "It is also unclear what interactions, if any, the Department had with President Biden or his representatives about his mishandling of classified material."

"The Department’s actions here appear to depart from how it acted in similar circumstances," Jordan and Johnson wrote, referring to the way former President Donald Trump was treated for a similar misstep. When it was Trump, the government behaved as if keeping classified documents was equivalent to treason.

"These are dark times for our Nation, as my beautiful home, Mar-A-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, is currently under siege, raided, and occupied by a large group of FBI agents," Trump said in an email through his Save America political group, according to NBC News.

"After working and cooperating with the relevant Government agencies, this unannounced raid on my home was not necessary or appropriate," Trump added. "They even broke into my safe!"

Trump had been working with the National Archives and Records Administration to return the documents when the raid occurred. Jordan and Johnson acknowledged that fact and demanded accountability.

"In fact, on August 8, 2022, despite the publicly available evidence of President Trump’s voluntary cooperation, you personally approved the decision to seek a warrant for excessive and unprecedented access to his private residence," the letter went on. "On August 15, 2022, Committee Republicans wrote to you and FBI Director Christopher Wray requesting documents and information related to the FBI’s raid of President Trump’s residence."

The letter noted that the request has yet to be granted. "The American people deserve transparency and accountability from our most-senior executive branch law enforcement officials."

If the DOJ was only concerned about proper keeping of classified documents, Biden would be receiving the same treatment as Trump did. It's clear that there is a double standard, and Republicans are expertly holding them to account for this.
