House Democrat Angie Craig assaulted in an elevator

According to the New York Post, U.S. Rep. Angie Craig (D-MN) was assaulted in the elevator of her Washington, D.C. apartment building on Thursday.

A suspect is now in custody.

Details about the incident were provided on Thursday by Nick Coe, Craig's chief of staff. Coe writes:

This morning, around 7:15 a.m., Rep. Craig was assaulted in the elevator of her apartment building in Washington D.C. Rep. Craig defended herself from the attacker and suffered bruising, but is otherwise physically okay.

According to Coe, Craig the suspect fled and Craig called 9-1-1.

Coe added that "there is no evidence that the incident was politically motivated," and that "Rep. Craig is grateful to the D.C. metropolitan Police Department for their quick response and asks for privacy at this time."

More information has been obtained via the police report.

According to that report, Craig said "good morning" to a man whom she saw acting erratically in her apartment building. Craig specifically described the man as acting "as if he was under the influence of an unknown substance."

Craig then proceeded to the elevator and the man followed. Once in the elevator, the man is reported to have started doing push-ups. Then, Craig says that "a closed fist [of the suspect] punched her on the chin area of her face, and later grabbed her neck."

Craig says that she was able to defend herself by pouring her hot morning coffee on him. This was enough to allow her to escape.

"My morning coffee really saved the day yesterday, but not exactly how I expected it to," Craig said in a public statement on Friday, adding, "On a serious note, I will also say that I was very, very lucky that I was not more injured -- and I'll have more to say about that soon."

Now, CBS News reports that authorities have a suspect in custody: 26-year-old Kendrid Hamlin.

Hamlin, according to the outlet, has a bit of a record. Per CBS News:

The man accused of assaulting Democratic Rep. Angie Craig of Minnesota in the elevator of her Capitol Hill apartment complex has been accused of several menacing, sometimes violent, incidents in the Capitol Hill community since 2015.

The outlet goes on to report that Hamlin has "nearly a decade of criminal cases," adding, "several of the incidents and arrests occurred in particularly close proximity to the grounds of the Capitol."

Hamlin is now set to appear in federal court in Washington D.C. on Monday.
