House Democrat admits Jan. 6 committee never saw the footage revealed by Tucker Carlson

U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MI), according to CNN, just admitted that the House Jan. 6 Committee was never given the opportunity to thoroughly examine the footage that has been recently revealed by the Fox News Channel's Tucker Carlson.

In case you missed it, Carlson, over the past week, has been releasing surveillance footage from the Capitol protest that occurred on Jan 6, 2021. He has been doing so on his program Tucker Carlson Tonight.

Carlson has been given the opportunity to do so by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), who has granted Carlson exclusive access to some 40,000 hours of security camera footage from the Capitol Building.

The footage, thus far, has largely contradicted the narrative being pushed by many - including Thompson and the House Jan. 6 that he chaired - namely, that former President Donald Trump incited his supporters to launch a violent insurrection on the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

Now, Thompson is claiming that, basically, he and his committee never saw the footage.

CNN's Alayna Treene reported on Wednesday:

.@BennieGThompson, former chair of the Jan. 6 committee, said lawmakers were never given that type of access to the footage last Congress. “It’s strictly a new policy that the new speaker has put in place," he told CNN.

Treene continued by reporting, "Thompson said he doesn’t think any of the Jan. 6 members themselves ever had access to the footage — they let only staff view it."

"I'm actually not aware of any member of the committee who had access," Thompson is quoted as saying. "We had a team of employees who kind of went through the video."

As Jon Dougherty, of the Conservative Brief, points out, Thompson's statements are particularly problematic.

Dougherty writes:

Regardless of whether the panel members’ staff simply skimmed through the video or were already aware of it but opted to keep it hidden, the January 6 investigation was supposedly tasked by then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) for delivering an impartial and precise account of the event.

Of course, "impartiality" is anything but what the very partisan House Jan. 6 committee gave the American people.

This is why McCarthy has given Carlson access to the footage: he is looking to expose the way the Democrats tried to use Jan. 6 for their political gain.

"What I want to produce for everybody is exactly what I said, that people can actually look at it and see what’s gone on that day," McCarthy recently said.

"Each person can come up with their own conclusion [about the footage], but what I just want to make sure is I had transparency," he added.
