Homeland’s Mayorkas brushes off McCarthy’s threat of impeachment

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said on Sunday that he isn’t concerned about the assertion by House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) that he will be impeached if the GOP takes control of the House during the midterm elections.

The DHS secretary made his comments during an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union” when moderator Dana Bash asked Mayorkas for a response to McCarthy’s recent comments, according to The Hill.

“I am incredibly proud to work with 250,000 dedicated and talented personnel, and I look forward to continuing to do so,” Mayorkas replied, confirming that he was confident when asked if there was any “concern” at all about the threat.

“I am not. I am focused on mission and supporting our incredible workforce,” Mayorkas replied.

The Biden cabinet member has been fielding questions since he declined to answer whether there were any illegal immigrants from the FBI’s terror watch list that were transported and distributed around the country by the government.

McCarthy, along with many Republicans, pushed back against the secretary’s comments saying that it is job to make sure there weren’t dangerous criminals being transported to local communities by the government.

“This is his moment in time to do his job. But at any time if someone is derelict in their job, there is always the option of impeaching somebody,” McCarthy said. “But right now, he’s got 30 days. His first response to us should be, ‘We should not lift Title 42,’” McCarthy said. “They’re not prepared to protect, and we cannot sustain what will happen to this nation.”

Mayorkas’ controversy comes as Americans are uneasy about President Joe Biden’s decision to end the Trump administration-era policy that allowed for the rapid removal of illegal immigrants who were apprehended attempting to enter the United States.
