Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas refusing questions on impending Republican impeachment movement

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas refused to answer questions about Republicans' plans to impeach him over his failure to protect the border, the Daily Caller reported. A reporter pressed Mayorkas on the matter during a news conference Thursday.

The reporter wanted to know whether Mayorkas was concerned that the newly-minted majority among House Republicans planned to impeach him. Rather than face the issue head-on, Mayorkas deflected.

"I’ve got a tremendous amount of work to do … and I will continue to do that work,” Mayorkas said. "The longevity of these programs is something that, of course, depends on what we are experiencing at the border and the dynamism, as I mentioned, of the migration challenge that is gripping this hemisphere and, frankly, the entire world."

The ongoing crisis at the southern border had prompted the Republican Study Committee to announce plans to impeach Mayorkas. The committee's chairman, Rep. Jim Banks (R-IN), said in April that Mayorkas had turned a "secure border into a lawless horror show."

Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), who was House Minority Leader, went further and gave Mayorkas an ultimatum. "If Secretary Mayorkas does not resign, House Republicans will investigate every order, every action, and every failure to determine whether we can begin an impeachment inquiry," he said.

Republicans went on to win a majority in the 2022 midterms, and the new Congress was sworn in this week. Still, Mayorkas has remained steadfast in keeping his position despite his abject failure to secure the border.

The number of illegal immigrant apprehensions has exploded under President Joe Biden and Mayorkas. In the fiscal year 2022 alone, encounters between Border Patrol and migrants numbered more than 2.3 million, smashing to bits all previous records.

Shockingly, Mayorkas and members of the Biden administration claim that the border is secure even amid the inundation. It is a claim he has repeated even while admitting to the other problems at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Moreover, Mayorkas believes the U.S. can handle an increased number of illegal immigrants set to cross the border should Title 42 protections be abolished, Fox News reported. This provision allows for limits on border crossers due to public health concerns.

However, the courts are still deciding whether Title 42 will stay after the administration sought to eliminate it, which would mean an even greater surge of migrants if Democrats get their way. Mayorkas said they are ready despite evidence to the contrary.

"There's no question that the number of encounters that we are experiencing at the border is straining our system," he said. "Within the broken immigration system that we are operating, we are managing the number of encounters, and we are prepared to address the end of Title 42," he said, blaming the "broken system" instead of his own failures.

"We've been preparing for this since well beyond last year." It's unclear how an immigration system Mayorkas calls "broken" and already "straining" can be prepared for more of the same, however.

Still, Mayorkas tacitly admitted that unchecked illegal immigration is something the administration is happy about. "We have 10 million job openings in the United States," he said before alluding to the failure of a bill that would have granted amnesty to millions as the solution.

Illegal immigration threatens national security, and Mayorkas shirked his duty from day one. Republicans must hold him accountable for the mess he created -- and voters must do the same in 2024.
