Hollywood award shows are tanking in ratings, in large part because Americans don’t want to hear privileged Hollywood elites go on unhinged political rants, according to a report by Breitbart News.
The outlet reports an “anonymous producer told the New York Times that a minute-by-minute post-show ratings analysis indicated that ‘vast swaths’ of people turned off their televisions whenever celebrities started to opine on politics.”
The news comes as ABC prepares for this Sunday’s Oscar awards. The award program reportedly experienced a huge six million-viewership drop loss last year, despite more Americans at home due to pandemic restrictions.
The 2020 Academy Awards telecast drew 23.6 million viewers, a drop from 29.6 million in 2019.
Breitbart notes the Oscars drew as many as 46.3 million viewers in 2000.
The Oscars are not alone in rating drops among award shows. The 2021 Golden Globes noted only 6.9 million viewers, a 63 percent drop from 2020.
CNBC noted the Oscars had not tanked so low since the 2008 Hollywood writers’ strike. That year, the award show was condensed to press conference instead of a full award program.
The network added, “The ceremony drew a 1.5 rating among adults 18-49, a drastic 68% drop from the prior year’s show, which previously held the record for the all-time lowest rating for that key demographic.”
The statistics may appear dire, but they are revealing. The same Americans who want to see Hollywood stars on television are the same people who do not want to hear political drama.
