Columbia University has just announced that it has hired Hillary Clinton. 

The announcement was made by Columbia President Lee C. Bollinger in a message that was released to the Columbia community.

Clinton will have two roles: Professor of Practice at the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) and Presidential Fellow at Columbia World Projects (CWP).

"At SIPA, Secretary Clinton will work . . . on a variety of major initiatives, especially those focusing on global politics and policy and on supporting female leaders in those arenas," Bollinger writes.

He adds, "in her role at Columbia World Projects, Secretary Clinton will work . . . to support programming related to renewing democracy and advancing efforts for effective engagement of women and youth in this country and around the world."

Bollinger, after revealing that he has "personally" known Clinton for three decades, goes on to make the case for hiring Clinton.

After recalling her background in politics, Bollinger writes:

Given her extraordinary talents and capacities together with her singular life experiences, Hillary Clinton is unique, and, most importantly, exceptional in what she can bring to the University’s missions of research and teaching, along with public service and engagement for the public good.

"It is, therefore, with great delight and pride that I make this announcement that Secretary Clinton will be bringing her capacities, experience, and wisdom to this institution," Bollinger concludes. "I expect us all to benefit immeasurably from working with her in the months and years ahead."

Clinton followed this up with a statement of her own, saying: I am honored to join Columbia University, and the School of International and Public Affairs, and Columbia World Projects."

Clinton added:

Columbia’s commitment to educating the next generation of U.S. and global policy leaders, translating insights into impact, and helping to address some of the world’s most pressing challenges resonates personally with me. I look forward to contributing to these efforts.

The question that many are now asking is whether this all means that Clinton really is done with politics - or, at least, done with running for office.

Clinton has insisted that she will not be seeking office again. But, there have been reports suggesting that she might be trying to position herself in order to do so.

This new position at Columbia, though, would seem to rule out such a bid.

Clinton will begin working at Columbia during the 2023-2024 academic year. It's a pretty safe bet, therefore, that she will not be running for office in 2024.
