Hakeem Jeffries is selected to replace Pelosi as the Dems' next House leader

Fox News reports that Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) has been selected to be the Democrats' next leader in the U.S. House of Representatives.

It wasn't much of a competition, though. According to the outlet, the election was "uncontested."

There had been some speculation that other Democratic leaders in the House - such as Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-NY) or Majority Whip Jim Clyburn (D-SC) - might try for the spot. But, it appears that the Democrats' old guard in the House has finally decided to pass the reigns on.

Background

Jeffries, of course, will be replacing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA).

It was following the midterm elections - specifically, after it became official that the Republicans will have the House majority in the next congress - that the 82-year-old Pelosi announced her decision to step down from her House leadership role, a position that she has held since 2003.

"For me, the hour has come for a new generation to lead the Democratic caucus that I so deeply respect, and I'm grateful that so many are ready and willing to shoulder this awesome responsibility," Pelosi said at the time.

Although Pelosi is stepping down from her leadership post, she has decided to remain in the House, which could make things somewhat awkward going forward, although Jeffries has already pushed back on this idea.

Who is Jeffries?

If you have been following these storylines, then Jeffries's name will not be unfamiliar. For years, reports have indicated that Pelosi has been grooming Jeffries to replace her, which is one of the reasons why the selection of Jeffries to lead House Democrats comes as no real surprise.

Those outlets that obsess over skin color are reporting that the 52-year-old Jeffries will be the first Black individual to be the House Democratic leader.

There likely are more extreme leftists in the House than Jeffries. But Jeffries is far from a centrist Democrat.

As the Daily Wire reports, Jeffries has repeatedly claimed that Republicans are racists, he participated in such Democratic shams as the impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump, he has attacked conservative justices on the U.S. Supreme Court, he has accused Republicans of voter suppression, and he has even referred to Republicans as election deniers despite the fact that he, himself, is at least a nine-time election denier.

"A moment of transition"

In recent years, there have many reports of infighting amongst the Democrats, particularly with the progressives and the establishment types.

A big question going forward will be whether or not Jeffries can keep all factions of his party in line. We'll see.

On Tuesday, Jeffries said, "This is a moment of transition. We stand on the shoulders of giants, but are also looking forward to being able to do what's necessary at this moment to advance the issues."
