Guitarist Jeff Beck dies at 78

Jeff Beck, the well-known guitarist, has died, the Daily Wire reports.

He was 78.

Beck's passing was announced in a statement posted on his Twitter page by his family on Wednesday, Jan. 11, the day after his passing.

The statement reads:

On behalf of his family, it is with deep and profound sadness that we share the news of Jeff Beck’s passing. After suddenly contracting bacterial meningitis, he peacefully passed away yesterday. His family asks for privacy while they process this tremendous loss.

The Mayo Clinic website explains:

Meningitis is an infection and inflammation of the fluid and membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord . . . The inflammation from meningitis typically triggers symptoms such as headache, fever and a stiff neck . . . Some cases of meningitis improve without treatment in a few weeks. Others can cause death and require emergency antibiotic treatment.

How Beck contracted meningitis is not clear. There are many possibilities, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Beck is considered by many to be one of the greatest guitar players of all time.

According to the Hollywood reporter:

Beck won eight Grammy Awards and ranked fifth on Rolling Stone’s 2015 list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists. He was inducted twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as a member of the Yardbirds in 1992 and as a soloist in 2009.

Beck began making a name for himself in 1965 when he became the guitarist of The Yardbirds, taking over for Eric Clapton. The following year, he began his solo career.

The Associated Press reports:

[Beck] incorporated hard rock, jazz, funky blues and even opera. He was known for his improvising, love of harmonics and the whammy bar on his preferred guitar, the Fender Stratocaster.

Fox News reports that many in the music community have taken to social media to pay tribute to Beck. One such tribute came from Rod Stewart.

Stewart tweeted:

Jeff Beck was on another planet . He took me and Ronnie Wood to the USA in the late 60s in his band the Jeff Beck Group and we haven’t looked back since. He was one of the few guitarists that when playing live would actually listen to me sing and respond. Jeff, you were the greatest, my man. Thank you for everything. RIP

Another tribute came from Ozzy Osbourne, who wrote:

I can’t express how saddened I am to hear of @JeffBeckMusic’s passing. What a terrible loss for his family, friends & his many fans. It was such an honor to have known Jeff & an incredible honor to have had him play on my most recent album, #PatientNumber9. Long live #JeffBeck.

Beck is survived by his wife, Sandra Beck.
