Republicans are calling on Vice President Kamala Harris to talk directly to the Americans affected by illegal immigration along the U.S.-Mexico border, according to Breitbart News.
The GOP members penned a memo to the vice president after news of her trip to El Paso, Texas came out indicating that she would be visiting what they called “TV-ready” detention areas without hearing from, or speaking directly to, the Americans impacted by illegal immigration.
“After more than 3 months of complete failure, Kamala Harris’ brief border drop-in is not enough,” said a blast email from the Republican National Committee criticizing Harris’ trip.
The RNC called out Harris for “not listening to the Americans who need Biden to reverse course on the policies that created his deadly border crisis,” and went on to quote several residents who have been massively impacted by the crisis, including LaSalle County Constable Rene Maldonado who said that the rate of human smuggling: “It’s just been one after the other after the other…It’s not stopping.”
The party email went on to talk about physical and emotional impact, without getting into the economic devastation this crisis is thought to be taking.
The RNC memo also quoted Chaney McCollum, a Texas border-county resident who said, “I’ve never really been scared until now…I should not have to be put in a situation where I can’t leave my house. Normal people out here don’t lock their barns. Now, we do.”
Others have come out to condemn Harris’ nod toward making a difference at the southern border including Chad Wolf, who served as acting secretary of the Department of Homeland Security for President Donald Trump:
“While it’s certainly positive that she is taking this step, I am disappointed that she is not going to the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) – the very epicenter of this crisis,” said Wolf in a statement.
“Instead, she is going to El Paso, a metropolitan area 800-1,000 miles away from the RGV. Hopefully, Harris’ trip will be a working visit, not just border security tourism.”
Harris was harrassed relentlessly about not going to the southern border, and many were encouraged when she finally announced the trip. The trip that Americans experienced, however, left many with the impression of lip service and the concern that they were being patronized. Whether or not Harris will ever visit the real crisis areas is a question that cannot yet be answered.
