Now that Donald Trump has been acquitted of the impeachment charges, attention is turning to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), who was just called upon by House Republicans to answer for her own actions on January 6th and the days prior.
House Administration Committee Ranking Member Rodney Davis (R-IL), House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Jim Jordan (R-OH), House Oversight Committee Ranking Member James Comer (R-KY), and House Intelligence Committee Ranking Member Devin Nunes (R-CA) sent a letter to Pelosi warning her that she won’t be getting away from this debacle scot-free.
The letter, sent to Pelosi on Monday, declared that there are”many important questions” about her “responsibility for the security” of the Capitol on Jan. 6 “remain unanswered.”
Then-Capitol Police Chief Steve Sund revealed that he had asked then-Sargeant at Arms Paul Irving to request assistance from the national guard, which was ultimately refused at the time. Irvine told Sund that “the optics” weren’t right and didn’t feel the “intelligence supported it.”
The group of GOP Congressmen laid the blame for the security gap at Pelosi’s feet, claiming that she has the ultimate responsibility for the security of the House — which she seems to agree with since she has been so insistent about enforcing the use of metal detectors for all entering the House floor.
“As you are aware, the Speaker of the House is not only the leader of the majority party, but also has enormous institutional responsibilities,” the GOP coalition wrote. “The Speaker is responsible for all operational decisions made within the House.”
The GOP Reps. added that over the years, they’ve witnessed a “very heavy-handed and tightly controlled approach to House operations that has been exerted by yourself, your staff, and an army of appointed House officials.”
“When then-Chief Sund made a request for national guard support on January 4th, why was that request denied?” the Republicans wrote. “Did Sergeant at Arms Paul Irving get permission or instruction from your staff on January 4th prior to denying Chief Sund’s request for the national guard?”
When Sund again requested national guard assistance on January 6th, it took a full hour for the permission to come through after running up the chain of command — which included Pelosi and her “designees.”
The GOP Reps. also indicated that Pelosi has refused to comply with requests to release information regarding the events of January 6th and the days leading up to it, even though she released some of the same information to the House Judiciary Committee as part of the failed impeachment proceedings.
“End this political charade, and work with us to protect the Capitol and those who work here every day,” they demanded.
