As Democrats continue to rehash the incursion at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, many on the right have found themselves downplaying the events. One Fox News host thinks that’s a problem.
Fox News anchor Bret Baier is concerned that many supporters of former President Donald Trump refuse to see what a “big deal” it was for his supporters to breach the Capitol, Breitbart reported. Baier was reacting to testimony from officers on the ground that day.
Four officers from the Capitol Police spoke to the House investigative committee about their experience at the hands of some of the rioters, according to Fox News. While their testimony was powerful, the political games House Speaker Nancy Pelosi played leading up to the hearing have detracted from the impact of the investigation.
Pelosi refused to allow Republican Reps. Jim Jordan of Ohio and Jim Banks of Indiana onto the commission because of their support for Trump. If this was truly a fact-finding mission and not a political stunt, many felt the Speaker would have allowed them to be seated on the committee.
Still, Baier was clearly swayed by the testimony elicited from the officers about what happened that day. “I watched every minute of this,” Baier told the “America Reports” audience Tuesday. “If you were watching, you saw compelling, at times damning, emotional testimony from these four officers who fought the line to try to protect the Capitol and the lawmakers inside. For anybody watching who looked at that and looked at the videos and their testimony about that day and thought it was not violent, I think that was an eye-opener.”
Many on the right have dismissed the severity of the riot mostly because of the way Democrats pounced on it for political gain. For instance, early reports that one officer was bludgeoned to death turned out to be false, though it’s still worth noting that some officers were injured at the hands of protestors.
“We obviously talked about January 6 a lot in the time since then but putting it all together and seeing it again is jarring,” Baier continued. “And to listen to these officers say how they really fought to hold onto their lives,” he noted.
“While Republicans politically are saying that this is a partisan effort and that they charge that it’s not going to get to the questions that they think are important about January 6th, why were the Capitol Police so ill-prepared for what happened that day. You cannot watch this testimony and say that it’s not a big deal,” Baier claimed. “And you cannot watch this testimony and say that there are questions that are going to take us places that I don’t think we know where we’re going to go yet.”
What happened at the Capitol that dark day was ugly and shameful and should never happen again. However, the same media that excused months of Black Lives Matter riots suddenly were outraged at violence and destruction.
It’s not that the right doesn’t take it seriously, it’s that the left has just turned it into another opportunity for grandstanding and denigrating Trump supporters.
