Former U.S. Marine Cooper "Harris" Andrews died in Ukraine while assisting with evacuation efforts due to the ongoing conflict, the Daily Wire reported. The 26-year-old met his demise last month on the so-called "Road to Life."

At the time, Andrews was working with the Resistance Committee activist group. He was traveling on the access road near Bakhmuta that the Ukrainian military used as a supply route when he perished in a mortar attack on April 19.

In November, the Cleveland, Ohio, native had joined the Foreign Legion in the war-torn nation that was assisting the military in its fight to push back invading Russian forces. According to his mother, Willow Andrews, Cooper Andrews's body has not been recovered due to the ongoing war.

Popular Front journalist Jake Hanrahan shared the news, noting Andrews supported the citizen journalism outlet and its mission. "I’m very sad to say this, but one of the @PopularFront community has been killed fighting in Ukraine," Hanrahan tweeted with a photo of the former Marine.

"Cooper ‘Harris’ Andrews, 26, was a long-time PF supporter and part of our Discord. He was a former US Marine and lifelong leftist organizer. He was killed in Bakhmut," Hanrahan noted.

"Cooper was killed alongside other leftist fighters in Ukraine. He was part of the Foreign Legion and later the Resistance Committee. He was ambushed by Russian forces whilst defending evacuees," the journalist claimed.

Hanrahan went on to add that Andrews was a "noted member of the PF community, meeting [in real life] with others," he wrote in the Twitter thread. "He was funny, not too serious, but deeply dedicated to what he believed in," Hanrahan added.

"We didn’t know he was out there and are shocked by the news. Condolences from all of us go out to his family and friends."

The U.S. State Department responded to the Daily Wire's request for comment but didn't provide much additional information. "We are in touch with the family and providing all possible consular assistance," a State Department spokesperson said in an email to the news outlet.

"Out of respect for the family’s privacy during this difficult time, we have nothing further to add." So far, the conflict has claimed the lives of at least nine Americans who have volunteered to join Kyiv in the fight.

The deceased include an Army infantryman and former Navy Seal, though there hasn't been an official military deployment to the region yet. President Joe Biden's administration has attempted to deter American citizens from taking up arms for Ukraine in such a manner.

Many who do volunteer are ex-military or members of humanitarian and volunteer groups. The Ukrainian embassy in Washington, D.C., has fielded some 6,000 requests from Americans wishing to help, though many are rejected for lack of eligibility.

The war has been a bloody one for the Russian armed forces, which has lost at least 100,000 people since the conflict began more than a year ago. Americans are eager to help push back Russian President Vladimir Putin's advancing army, but the effort appears to be more challenging than expected.

By all accounts, Andrews was one of the brave souls who laid down his life for others. His death is a tragedy, but self-sacrificing American heroes will never be forgotten.
