Former Russian leader Mikhail Gorbachev dies at 91

Mikhail Gorbachev, the former Russian leader who was influential in ending the Cold War and the Soviet Union, has died at the age of 91.

Gorbachev passed away at Central Hospital Clinic, according to Russian media. No cause of death was noted.

"Gorbachev also supported Eastern European countries that wished to secede from the Soviet Union, promising them he would not intervene," The Hill reported.

"After the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, Gorbachev quickly worked to bring an end to the communist Soviet Union, ending 45 years of geopolitical tensions with the U.S. and the Western world, and leading many other countries to sever ties with communism across the world," it added.

Gorbachev was known for his work with former President Ronald Reagan and other leaders to help end nuclear tensions and the Cold War.

His legacy helped make his nation and the world a better place through diplomacy and bold actions that continue to shape history.
