Former PA state Sen. Tim Shaffer dies

A former Pennsylvania district judge and state Sen. Tim Shafer died Tuesday in his home in Butler County at the age of 76.

The lawyer had served as a state senator for 16 years and was highly involved in the politics and community of his local area.

“Shaffer was a 1963 graduate of Slippery Rock School District before he went to college and earned his law degree. He soon would serve as the Butler County solicitor before he was elected to the state senate,” Butler Radio reported.

“He would serve the 21st District from 1981 to 1996. He returned to practice law locally, and would eventually become a district judge in 2010,” the report added.

In addition to his roles in government and the community, the long-time Republican served as a lieutenant in the Army during the Vietnam War.

“He was one of the first members of the state Senate who had served in the Vietnam War. He was a first lieutenant in the Army and was awarded a Bronze Star for his service,” according to the Butler Eagle.
