Former Georgia GOP Sen. Johnny Isakson passes away

Former Georgia Republican Sen. Johnny Isakson passed away Sunday at the age of 76.

Isakson served as Senator for the Peach State from 2005 to 2019. He had previously battled Parkinson’s Disease, though no cause of death was noted in a statement from Georgia’s governor or Isakson’s family.

“Georgia has lost a giant, one of its greatest statesmen, and a servant leader dedicated to making his state and country better than he found it,” Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp said in a statement.

“Johnny Isakson personified what it means to be a Georgian. Johnny was also a dear friend to Marty, the girls, and me — as he was to so many,” Kemp added.

Isakson was known for his efforts to serve veterans and disaster relief.

“His work to champion our veterans, deliver disaster relief for Georgia farmers after Hurricane Michael, and always stand up for Georgia’s best interest in the U.S. Senate will live on for generations to come,” Kemp added.
