One former staffer for Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) voiced his frustrations with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Could this be part of quiet in-fighting between the old guard in the Democratic Party and the newest members?
Ocasio-Cortez’s former communications director Corbin Trent charged Pelosi with “impacting my life in a negative way for a long time,” Fox News reported. Trent also accused Pelosi of going too easy on moderates in the party, underscoring his boss’s far-left bent.
“I’m a 40-year-old, and Pelosi’s been doing a whole lot of s–t that’s been impacting my life in a negative way for a long time,” Trent said in a Thursday story in Politico. “I don’t think she’s got a whole lot to be too proud of, though she thinks she does,” he spilled Thursday about the tensions between Pelosi and the newest members.
Trent drove the point home about Pelosi’s center-left leanings by linking her to Rep. Josh Gottheimers (D-NJ) who has tried to build a more bipartisan coalition to get things done. “I’ve watched … her pat herself on the back continuously for her ‘master of negotiations’ with right-wing presidents and the Josh Gottheimers of the world,” he reportedly said.
The former staffer went on to rehash an incident where Pelosi seemed to slight Ocasio-Cortez and the other four congresswomen known as “The Squad” just after they took office. He charged “it’s a little disgusting” for Pelosi “to go in there and then say these freshman women of color of Congress are going in and posing for pictures.”
At the time, Pelosi seemed to take issue with them for asking for pictures with her after they took office. “See how perfect I am and how pure?” Pelosi had said in a mocking tone.
“The Squad” included radicals like Ocasio-Cortez along with Reps. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts, and Ilhan Omar of Minnesota. While both sides have tried to appear they’re getting along, cracks sometimes form in the well-polished veneer.
In 2019, when former President Donald Trump said the congresswomen were the new face of the party, Pelosi’s response made waves. “Let’s not waste our time on that,” she said, which of course resulted in charges of racism against her.
The simmering tensions between Pelosi and the four congresswomen are a microcosm for the division in the nation. Right now, traditional Democratic policies are being overshadowed by the march toward socialism Ocasio-Cortez and her ilk are trying to usher in. Unfortunately, whichever side wins always means America loses.
