Florida GOP Rep. Cory Mills endorses Donald Trump over Ron DeSantis for 2024

Florida GOP Rep. Cory Mills endorsed former President Donald Trump in his 2024 bid for the presidency, the Conservative Brief reported. Mills claimed in his announcement Monday that it was in response to Trump's indictment in Manhattan last month.

"I think that what’s happening in New York is a very unifying event," Mills said. "We need to stop the infighting and come together and unify," he added.

"And I think right now the person that we need to be unifying behind is President Trump," Mills added. Last month, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg slapped Trump with 34 charges related to a supposed hush-money payment he made to porn star Stormy Daniels.

The two allegedly had an affair in 2006, and Daniels was paid to keep quiet about it during the 2016 election. However, the merits of the case are flimsy at best, which many believe points to the fact that it's a political prosecution.

The former president has pleaded not guilty and will have his day in court. However, Trump has gained an edge in the Republican Party since his legal woes began.

So far, Trump has pulled four Florida Republicans in Congress to his side, including Mills. The former president's eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., lauded Mills for joining his colleagues.

"Thanks to Cory Mills for joining other members of the FL Congressional Delegation like Matt Gaetz, Byron Donalds, and Anna Paulina in endorsing my father for President in 2024!" the younger Trump tweeted. "Proud to have this amazing group of #MAGA rockstars supporting President Trump in Florida," Donald Trump Jr. added.

Trump's closest competitor, Florida GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis,  has not announced his intention to run for high office. However, he has received the endorsement of Reps. Chip Roy of Texas and Thomas Massie of Kentucky.

Still, Trump has picked up even more momentum in the polls ahead of the Republican primary. When prospective voters were given 15 candidates to choose from in a survey in February, Trump was ahead of DeSantis by 14 points.

By March, Trump's lead was up to 30 points. Fox News, which conducted the polls, noticed that Trump was the far-and-away leader over DeSantis and the others. "No one else hits double digits," the survey analysis said.

"Mike Pence comes in third with 6%, Liz Cheney and Nikki Haley receive 3% each, and Greg Abbott comes in at 2%. All others receive 1% support or less, and just 3% are unsure," the network added.

As good as this might look for Trump in the Republican primary, the road to the White House in the general election is shaping up to be much more difficult. An ABC News/Ipsos survey found that half of Americans believe Trump should have been charged with a crime, and he'll have to convince more than just the Republican base that he should be president again.

Just about anything can happen between now and the 2024 presidential election. However, Trump's prospects for becoming the nominee for the GOP are looking better by the day, thanks to the Democrats.
