Party politics aside, it’s indisputable that COVID-19 cases in America are on the rise and as a result, more Americans are dying each day as the winter season approaches and threats of even greater spikes are anticipated by a number of health experts.
One of those experts, Dr. Anthony Fauci, just issued a stark warning this week about the potential loss of life that the nation can expect in the coming months, according to The Hill. Fauci is predicting that the death toll, which currently stands at roughly 250,000, could easily top 300,000 at the pandemic’s current trajectory.
“We’re now at over 250,000 deaths, a quarter of a million deaths. You could get well over 300,000 and close to even more than that if we don’t turn things around,” Fauci warned at a recent event hosted by the Washington Post.
However, the infectious disease expert, who was once a prominent figure on President Donald Trump’s Coronvirust Task Force, explained that if Americans make a concerted effort to continue social distancing and wear masks whenever possible, that his predicted numbers don’t have to be inevitable.
“I don’t want this to be a doomsday statement. It is within our power to not let those numbers happen,” Fauci said.
As it stands, there are an average of 170,000 new cases of the virus diagnosed each day in the U.S. — a number that indicates a 54 percent uptick in the average from just two weeks ago. Public health experts fear the worst for coming weeks and months, as millions of people are expected to travel and partake in Thanksgiving-related gatherings and, eventually, the same for the Christmas holidays.
“You might want to reconsider travel plans, and certainly try as best as you can to keep congregate meetings indoors — as innocent and wonderful as they sound — to a minimal number of people, preferably just members of a household,” Fauci warned.
But that warning is falling on the deaf ears of many across the country who believe in personal freedom and believe that state and federal governments have already grossly overreached on their attempts to mitigate the spread of the virus by imposing restrictions on family gatherings.
Thankfully because of President Donald Trump’s “Operation Warp Speed” initiative which greatly accelerated the testing and production of COVID-19 vaccines, NPR is reporting that there is a high likelihood that in December, the first group of Americans will receive a vaccine, offering some light at the end of the tunnel.
