Dr. Anthony Fauci ended rumors on Monday that the federal government will require Americans to use vaccine passports to prove they have received a COVID-19 vaccination — though his penchant for flip-flopping may color the public’s view of his statement.
“I doubt if the federal government is gonna be the leading element of that,” Fauci told the “Politico Dispatch” podcast in response to a question about the Biden administration’s plans for the controversial “passports.”
Fauci instead claimed he expects some businesses and educational institutions to develop their own vaccination policies.
Andy Slavitt, a senior adviser to the White House COVID-19 response team, has also noted, “The government is not viewing its role as the place to create a passport nor a place to hold the data of citizens. We view this as something that the private sector is doing, and we’ll do what’s important to us.”
The report comes as Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) announced he will use executive power to ban the state from using vaccine passports.
“Today I issued an executive order prohibiting the use of so-called COVID-19 vaccine passports,” DeSantis announced on Twitter Apr. 2. “The Legislature is working on making permanent these protections for Floridians and I look forward to signing them into law soon.”

Media has reported as many as 17 different companies are working to develop vaccine passports. Many of these passports would serve as a smartphone technology or app a person could use as proof of vaccination to enter certain businesses or attend a concert.
Fauci’s comments come as a relief to many Americans concerned with vaccine passports as a privacy issue. However, the fight over the role of vaccinations and a return to normal aspects of society will continue for some time.
