Mainstream media fact-checkers have apparently hit the limit for lies they will allow Joe Biden to get away with, and they hit the limit on Thursday.
After Biden claimed that Donald Trump is responsible for every single coronavirus death in the US during a CNN town hall, numerous mainstream — and highly anti-Trump — media establishments betrayed Biden by calling out the obvious lie.
Biden claimed during the course of the event:
If the president had done his job, had done his job from the beginning, all the people would still be alive. All the people — I’m not making this up. Just look at the data. Look at the data.
This is a common argument among rabidly anti-Trump blue checks and pundits, but the Washington Post and Politico pushed back against the notion, arguing that Biden’s claim is “vastly overstated.”
Washington Post fact-checker Glenn Kessler wrote:
Actually, Biden is making this up. There is no data to support this, even if the president had moved rapidly in January to deal with the coronavirus and been able to persuade the Chinese leadership to be more forthcoming about the situation. Even nations that have been praised for their handling of the pandemic, such as South Korea, New Zealand and Iceland, have suffered some deaths (377 in South Korea, 25 in New Zealand and 10 in Iceland).
In the United States, with 50 states run by governors, policies have varied greatly. Trump has been faulted for not articulating a national plan, but he would have had trouble persuading every governor to follow the exact same path.
Politico was blunter, writing that Biden’s remarks were “not true,” and he “vastly overstated what protections could have worked against the virus.”
Attacking Trump’s response to COVID-19 is a common trope. CNN analyst Max Boot even wrote an op-ed published by the Washington Post in March claiming that the outbreak would not have taken nearly as many lives if Hillary Clinton had won in 2016.
Though Trump’s COVID-19 response may leave something to be desired, Democrat politicians and the mainstream media curiously ignore actions on the part of numerous Democrat governors that were proven to directly increase COVID-19 deaths in their state.
It’s a great talking point for Democrats to lay the deaths of nearly 200,00 Americans at Trump’s feet, but when it comes down to providing evidence to back up the serious accusation, somehow they always come up short.
