Elon Musk invited to address online safety committee by UK Parliament

Elon Musk has been invited to address an online safety committee within the U.K. Parliament after his purchase of Twitter last week.

The Parliament’s digital group extended the offer after his $44 billion purchase that turned the social media platform back into a private company.

“I am honored and thank the Parliament for their invitation, but it would be premature at this time to accept, given that there has not yet been a shareholder vote,” Musk said in an email to the Associated Press.

Musk has already noted the potential for many possible changes to the platform, including some paid services.

“Twitter will always be free for casual users, but maybe a slight cost for commercial/government users,” he tweeted this week.

The committee may also be interested in his free speech perspectives as the U.K. is considering tougher laws against social media companies related to liability for actions taken on their platform. The same group sought to speak with Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg in 2018 over fake news, an invitation the company’s CEO declined.
