Former President Donald Trump hasn’t even said if he’s running for president in 2024. However, pundits are speculating about the details already.
Multiple sources within the GOP believe Trump could tap New York Rep. Elise Stefanik as his vice presidential running mate, the Conservative Brief reported. Stefanik has been aligning herself with Trump and would be a smart choice if he wants a woman on the ticket.
“There is a part of Trump who thinks he needs a female VP,” an unnamed adviser told CNN. “He definitely likes her, likely because of how effusive she is to him,” the adviser added.
Trump’s longtime friend Chris Ruddy had the same prediction. “President Trump thinks very highly of Elise Stefanik. She has been talked about in circles close to him as a potential vice presidential,” he said
“And there’s a feeling among a lot of people on the Republican side that they need to have a woman on the ticket this time,” Ruddy added. Another woman whose name comes up frequently in these discussions is Republican South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, though she stated she is “just so focused on South Dakota” rather than the what-ifs.
Iowa GOP Gov. Kim Reynolds’ name has also been bandied about. Some believe that a Midwest running mate could help Trump bridge the gap in purple states where his east coast pedigree is a liability.
Of course, the favorite choice would be Gov. Ron DeSantis. “Well, I get along with him,” Trump had previously said about the Florida Republican. “I was very responsible for his success because I endorsed him, and he went up like a rocket ship,” Trump boasted of DeSantis’ meteoric rise.
There’s still a long way to go to 2024, and anything can happen between now and then. However, Trump will be the candidate to beat if he decides to run. Both because of his own popularity and because Democrats have made such a mess out of everything.
