For the better part of 2020, whenever President Donald Trump held an event or press conference with regard to COVID-19 updates, one could always count on seeing infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci in the same room, usually providing updates after the president.
That’s why Fauci’s absence from perhaps the most significant COVID-19 update since this pandemic began was somewhat bizarre. According to Breitbart, Fauci claimed that he couldn’t make it to Trump’s COVID-19 vaccine update event due to a “scheduling conflict.”
The respected doctor, who leads the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said while he wanted to make it to Trump’s event, he instead attended a Nobel Prize even for a colleague by the name of Dr. Harvey Alter.
What was extremely interesting — and noteworthy — was that Fauci managed to make enough time to appear in a video for former Vice President Joe Biden, who held an event at approximately the same time as Trump. In the video, Fauci thanked Biden for including him as an adviser on his COVID-19 task force.
Fauci referred to Biden as “president-elect” in his video and said he looked forward to working with Biden and other “world-class experts” as they attempt to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic in the potential upcoming new administration. The infectious disease doctor also dropped the familiar “lead with science” talking point in his video.
“In the fight against this pandemic we must lead with science and that a key piece of our ongoing work is communicating constantly with the American people,” Fauci said.
Biden sang Fauci’s praises as he introduced the doctor as an adviser, saying “Dr. Fauci is trusted, a truth-teller, a patriot. Like every good doctor, he’ll tell me what I need to know, not what I want to know.”
According to Forbes, Trump’s camp took several subtle jabs at Fauci, with one of those jabs being the inclusion of Fauci in a short video that highlighted all of the people who doubted that a vaccine could be successfully rushed through. Trump also left out Fauci’s name when thanking everyone on his COVID-19 task force.
At this point, it seems as if Fauci is more concerned with the next step in his career over what’s happening right now on the ground with vaccine development and distribution.
