Donald Trump is 14 points ahead of Ron DeSantis in 2024 presidential primary

A recent poll has revealed that former President Donald Trump is 14 points ahead of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis as the two Republicans are likely to face off in the 2024 presidential primary, Breitbart reported. However, DeSantis has begun to catch up following Election Day.

The Politico/Morning Consult poll released Tuesday surveyed 1,983 registered voters. It was conducted from Nov. 10 to 14 and followed on the heels of DeSantis's decisive 19-point win for reelection in the Sunshine State.

The split was 47% for Trump among Republicans and independents who lean Republican as opposed to the 33% who chose DeSantis. In a distant third was former Vice President Mike Pence, with a paltry 5% of the vote.

As strong as these numbers are for Trump, they're down from previous polls. In June, McLaughlin & Associates pegged Trump at 59% to DeSantis' 15%, giving the former president a 44-point lead.

However, a July Harvard CAPS-Harris poll had Trump down to just a 40-point lead as 56% of respondents chose the former president and 16% chose DeSantis. By September, a Morning Consult Poll had Trump's lead down to 33 points over DeSantis.

Overall, Republicans' midterm performance was lackluster save for standouts like DeSantis. While pundits and politicians attempt to parse out why it happened, Trump announced his intention to run for president for the third time in 2024.

"In order to make America great and glorious again. I am tonight announcing my candidacy for president of the United States," Trump said Tuesday, according to Fox News. "But just as I promised in 2016, I am your voice," the former president told a crowd of his supporters.

"I am your voice. The Washington establishment wants to silence us, but we will not let them do that," Trump added.

"What we have built together over the past six years is the greatest movement in history because it is not about politics. It's about our love for this great country, America, and we're not going to let it fail," Trump said.

"I am running because I believe the world has not yet seen the true glory of what this nation can be," the former president continued. "We have not reached that pinnacle, believe it or not," Trump continued in another jab at President Joe Biden's inability to lead.

"In fact, we can go very far. We're going to have to go far first. We have to get out of this ditch," Trump said. "And once we're out, you'll see things that nobody imagined for any country. It's called the United States of America. And it's an incredible place."

Trump has a very large and very loyal base. However, DeSantis has proven himself a powerful and competent leader without Trump's impetuousness -- and that could make all of the difference for Republican primary voters.
