Donald Trump files lawsuit against Michael Cohen for $500 million

Former President Donald Trump has filed a lawsuit against his former lawyer Michael Cohen for $500 million.

The legal action was filed Wednesday in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florid.

The details

“This is an action arising from [Cohen’s] multiple breaches of fiduciary duty, unjust enrichment, conversion and breaches of contract by virtue of [Cohen’s] past service as [Trump’s] employee and attorney,” the lawsuit states.

"In addition to estimating more than $500 million in damages should the lawsuit be successful, the complaint seeks $74,000 subject to an allegedly 'unlawful conversion and made via fraudulent misrepresentation' by Cohen, plus interest and other costs and expenses," it added.

Cohen's response

Cohen's attorney shared a response to the lawsuit with CNN.

“Mr. Trump is once again using and abusing the judicial system as a form of harassment and intimidation against Michael Cohen,” Lanny Davis, Cohen’s attorney, said in a statement.

“Mr. Cohen will not be deterred and is confident that the suit will fail based on the facts and the law,” he added.

"Cohen, in 2018, pleaded guilty to arranging the hush money payments — among other federal charges — ahead of the 2016 presidential election to adult film actress Stormy Daniels and ex-Playboy model Karen McDougal, but maintains that Trump directed them," Fox News reported.

"Cohen also pleaded guilty to making false statements to a financial institution, making false statements to Congress and tax evasion. He was sentenced to three years in prison," it added.

Trump's recent arraignment in Manhattan is now being followed by his own legal case against his former lawyer with a massive dollar amount. The suit is likely to continue well into Trump's comeback bid to become president.

The latest legal move is no surprise but the outcome is far from certain as court actions against Trump and his organization have taken a variety of turns in recent cases. Trump's arraignment also looks to extend for several more months with the former president now scheduled to return in December for the next steps in the case with Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.
