Last week, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre made it clear that the White House was not interested in negotiating the upcoming debt limit issue.

According to Breitbart, that position seems to have changed drastically in the past few days, as President Joe Biden reportedly reached out to House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) to ask if he would be willing to negotiate in a meeting to take place next week, May 9.

Breitbart noted:

While traveling in Israel, McCarthy received a call from Biden to schedule a meeting to negotiate raising the debt limit after days of stonewalling tactics, Punchbowl News reported.

Just last week, Jean-Pierre said, "We are not negotiating on this," adding, "We’ve been very clear on this."

Breitbart reported that roughly one hour after the press briefing, during which KJP repeatedly slammed Republicans and said the White House refused to negotiate, Biden made the call to McCarthy, making for another embarrassing moment for the already struggling administration.

The White House's position change came after McCarthy reportedly shocked the Biden administration by getting a bill passed in the Republican-controlled House to raise the debt limit.

Florida Rep. Byron Donalds (R) commented on the situation.

JustTheNews reported later that McCarthy accepted Biden's invite to negotiate.

The outlet noted:

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy reportedly accepted an invitation to meet with President Joe Biden next week to discuss raising the debt ceiling after Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned lawmakers that the United States could default on its debt within a month.

It's not terribly surprising that the Biden administration gave in, given that it's already facing a number of crises as it prepares for Biden's second run for the White House.

Only time will tell if the two sides manage to negotiate a deal that's best for the American people.
