Lawyer and Harvard law professor emeritus Alan Dershowitz issued a statement on Sunday condemning calls from the radical left for Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer to retire.
“He’s a great, great man,” Dershowitz said regarding Breyer during an interview on “The Cats Roundtable” radio on Sunday, according to Breitbart News.
“And there are those on the radical left, including some academics, who are trying to force him off the court,” he added.
“They’re saying to him, ‘Look, quit, quit — even though you’re healthy and well and your appointment is for life because we want to make sure that President Biden gets to appoint your successor while there is still a majority of Democrats in the United States Senate.'”
The remarks came after recent calls by many Democrats for Breyer to retire before the 2022 midterm election. They have argued the move would allow President Joe Biden to nominate and replace Breyer with another liberal justice while Democrats are in power.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) became one of the most recent Democrats to support the effort. When asked by Dana Bash on CNN’s “State of the Union” earlier in June whether the 82-year-old justice should retire, Ocasio-Cortez responded, “I’m inclined to say yes.”
Many Democrats are concerned following the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in 2020 while former President Donald Trump was in office and Republicans controlled the Senate. The Senate soon voted to support Amy Coney Barrett, giving conservatives a 6-3 advantage in the court.
Desrshowitz may believe Breyer is a great man, but that won’t stop Democrats from urging him to retire. The goal of many on the left is to remain in power, no matter the cost.
