Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas facing impeachment from House Republicans

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas could face impeachment by at least 20 House Republicans for failing to stem the tide of illegal immigration, the Conservative Brief reported. A GOP majority will take over the House of Representatives when the new Congress convenes in January.

Republican Rep. Andy Biggs of Arizona led the charge against Mayorkas. Along with the other lawmakers, he announced Monday that they'd set their sights on Mayorkas.

"Secretary Mayorkas has released more than 1 million illegal aliens into the country," Biggs said. "Most of these released illegal aliens will never be heard from again."

Since Mayorkas has taken the position at the DHS, the U.S. has experienced unprecedented illegal immigration and a flood of illegal drugs over the border. Still, Mayorkas and members of the Biden administration, like Vice President Kamala Harris, have attempted to dismiss concerns.

"I think that there is no question that we have to do what the president and I asked Congress to do, the first request we made: pass a bill to create a pathway to citizenship," Harris told NBC's Chuck Todd in September. "The border is secure, but we also have a broken immigration system, in particular, over the last four years before we came in, and it needs to be fixed."

Harris had said this amid reports of a record-breaking 2 million Border Patrol encounters with illegal immigrants. That number dwarfed the previous fiscal year's whopping 1.7 million.

Mayorkas holds the same position as Harris and even testified to Congress that everything is as it should be at the U.S.-Mexico border. Colorado Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert joined Biggs' legal action and accused Mayorkas of selling "lies" to the American people.

"He regularly lies to the American people, claiming that the southern border is closed," Boebert said, according to Fox News. "I've been there. It's wide open."

Steps toward impeachment already came from the House Judiciary Committee, which is set to launch its own probe. "House Judiciary Republicans have summoned Mayorkas for border investigation," Texas GOP Rep. Mayra Flores said.

"Nothing short of an impeachment and removal proceedings should be the outcome." Unfortunately, impeachment is not an easy road, even with so many accusations of malfeasance.

Even with a Republican majority in the House, impeachment would require every Republican to go along with it. "A lot of us were upset at the way that House Democrats politicized the impeachment process during [former] President Donald Trump's tenure," an unnamed centrist Republican lawmaker said.

"No one wants to see a president or Cabinet official impeached simply for holding different views than the party in control of the House." While a resolution that states the misconduct or crime could pass with a simple majority, it would have to go to the Senate.

Impeachment requires a two-thirds majority to pass before heading to trial with the Supreme Court's chief justice presiding. Democrats will still have a 51-49 seat majority in the Senate, making it all but definite that it would die there.

It's clear to anyone willing to take a frank look at it that Mayorkas is shirking his responsibility. However, it's unlikely that any of the more squishy Republicans or disinterested Democrats will do a thing about it -- but at least some in the GOP are trying.
