Dems join GOP in effort to thwart Biden move on Title 42 border expulsions

In a serious blow to President Joe Biden and his open borders approach, five members of his own party have joined forces with Republicans to introduce legislation that would stop the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) from lifting Title 42, a pandemic-related mitigation measure that facilitates rapid expulsion of illegal immigrants, as Fox News reports.

The order at issue was put into place during the early weeks of the COVID-19 crisis, though Biden’s CDC recently announced that it would be lifted on May 23, a decision that has raised very real concerns of an imminent onslaught of migrants at the already-overwhelmed southern border.

As the Daily Caller News Foundation noted, five Democrats have lent their voices in opposition to the move, including Sens. Mark Kelly and Kyrsten Sinema (AZ), Maggie Hassan (NH), Jon Tester (MT), and Joe Manchin (WV).

Sinema explained her stance in a statement Thursday, saying, “Arizona communities bear the brunt of the federal government’s failure at our border, so we’re stepping in and protecting border communities by ensuring the administration works hand-in-hand with local leaders, law enforcement, and non-profits to put a comprehensive, workable plan in place before lifting Title 42.”

Kelly said simply, “The Biden administration was wrong to set an end date for Title 42 without a comprehensive plan in place.”

The proposed measure would extend the operation of Title 42 for an additional 60 days and force the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to develop a plan to handle the massive influx of arrivals the lifting of the pandemic measure is expected to yield, according to Fox News.

Just the News reported earlier this month that Customs and Border Protection officials have told agents to anticipate “irregular shifts and schedules, including holidays and weekends” as a result of the imminent removal of Title 42 restrictions.

While immigration activists and far-left liberals have lauded the administration for lifting the expulsion rules, there has been growing opposition from moderate Democrats and conservatives alike, with former Trump administration adviser Stephen Miller cautioning that doing so will “open the floodgates on a biblical scale.”

According to Fox News, if all Republicans and all of those Democrats who have expressed concerns about the disappearance of Title 42 rules actually end up supporting the aforementioned bill, the tally would come three votes shy of the total needed to overcome a filibuster, so hopefully, there are a few more lawmakers who can be persuaded to help thwart the disaster this administration seems determined to unleash.
