Until the Republican National Convention, Democrat strategists were confident that the Biden campaign’s strategy of hiding in the basement and allowing Trump to trip over his own feet was the way to win the election.
Now, as Trump’s approval ratings rise at an unprecedented pace, Democrat insiders have revealed that they believe the strategy may have fatally backfired.
One Democrat strategist told The Hill “If you’re not going to be out on the trail, you should be doing interviews every single day.”
“For whatever reason, they have determined that they can’t put him out there,” the strategist continued. “That’s the worst strategy. They need to get on the offensive, get out and talk to press. Their strategy is running out the clock but they better f—— pray for a kickass debate.”
Some Democrat pundits and politicians — including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) have suggested just the opposite — that Biden should find a way to avoid the debates with Trump, arguing that Biden should simply not give Trump the time of day.
Biden campaign insiders also still refuse to acknowledge that Trump currently holds the upper hand in terms of media coverage, according to The Hill’s report.
In just the last seven days, Trump appeared at the RNC each day, made multiple speeches, and then immediately hit the road to visit communities devastated by Hurricane Laura. Biden, in contrast, has made few public appearances since the previous week’s Democratic National Convention, save for a few carefully curated mainstream media interviews.
“[Biden’s campaign] is trying to do no harm but they’re also not doing any good,” remarked one Democratic fundraiser. “They’re thinking Trump is hurting himself but that’s a terrible calculation because Trump is at least getting himself in front of people and some of the people who see him think that he looks presidential. That matters.”
Biden’s campaign is stuck between a rock and a hard place — do they allow Biden to go out and make a spectacle of himself on the campaign trail, or do they keep him in the basement and hope that the mainstream media and big-tech activists will do the work for them? Only time will tell, but that time is running very short.
