Democrat Rep. David Cicilline seeks to ban Trump from future public office

In a clear sign of desperation about the prospect of another Trump presidency, Democrat Rep. David Cicilline (RI) this week sent a letter to House colleagues invoking the 14th Amendment to the Constitution and seeking co-sponsors for a bill designed to prevent the former commander in chief from again holding public office, as Fox News reports.

Cicilline, who served as one of the House managers during the second impeachment of then-President Donald Trump, issued his communication mere hours prior to the latter's announcement of his 2024 campaign for the White House, which he made in an address from his Florida estate, as ABC News noted.

According to the Providence Journal, Cicilline's letter makes heavy reference to language in the 14th Amendment declaring, "No person shall...hold any office, civil or military, under the United States...who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States...to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof."

The Democrat went on to rely on information presented by the House Select Committee probing the events of Jan. 6, 2021, to contend that "Trump engaged in insurrection" on that day "with the intention of overturning the lawful 2020 election results."

In Cicilline's estimation, Trump also "attempted to intimidate state and federal officials when they did not support his false claims and unlawful plans."

Trump is also accused by Cicilline of trying "to manipulate [then-Vice President] Mike Pence into unlawfully refusing to certify the election results despite Mr. Pence's legal advisors' assertion that he held no such authority" and of supporting "the violent insurrection at the Capitol...refusing for hours to denounce or act against the mob and putting thousands of lives in danger."

Cicilline then noted that he has "drafted legislation that would prevent Donald Trump from holding public office again," pursuant to the cited amendment.

The bill, stated the congressman, "details testimony and evidence" gathered by the aforementioned House committee and also draws upon other reporting from that time period to make the case that Trump should be precluded from holding public office in the future.

The Providence Journal noted that it was unclear how many legislators might already be on board with Cicilline's proposed bill.

According to Fox News, no response appeared forthcoming from the office of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) to the question of whether the measure outlined by Cicilline would be taken up by the lower chamber during the lame-duck congressional session.

Also mum on the Democrat's rather incendiary proposal thus far has been the Trump 2024 campaign, as Fox News further noted.

From Cicilline's outrageous legislative gambit to the media's frenzied attempt to drum up a mutually destructive feud between the former president and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, one thing is clear, namely, that Democrats and their journalistic allies are terrified that another Trump administration could well be on the cards.
