Democrat Patrick Wojahn, close friend of Pete Buttigieg, arrested on 56 charges of child pornography

A Maryland Democratic mayor was arrested on Thursday on 56 charges of child pornography.

Patrick Wojahn, 47, was jailed on 40 counts of possession of exploitative child material and 16 counts of distribution of exploitative child material, according to a press release from the Prince George’s County Police Department (PGPD). Wojahn is also a close friend of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg who he referred to as a mentor.

The crimes

"The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children first alerted the department that a social media account operating within the county was distributing 'suspected child pornography' on February 17, according to the PGPD," Breitbart News reported.

"Through an investigation, authorities determined that the account belonged to the sitting mayor. On February 28, the PGPD executed a search warrant at his home in College Park, seizing 'multiple cell phones, a storage device, a tablet and a computer,'" it added.

Mayor resigns

Wojahn resigned in a statement late Thursday, according to NBC News.

“Last night, after business hours, Mayor Patrick L. Wojahn submitted his letter of resignation as Mayor of the City of College Park, effective immediately on March 2. Mayor Wojahn has served in this position since 2015 and on Council since 2007. The City of College Park thanks Mayor Wojahn for his many years of dedicated service,” the statement said.

“Effective immediately, Mayor Pro Tem Denise Mitchell will serve as presiding officer until a Special Election is held and a new Mayor has been sworn in. Per the City Charter, a Special Election must be held within 65 days," it added.

The former mayor did not admit any details in the arrest but instead noted an investigation that led him to leave his role.

"While this investigation does not involve any official city business of any kind, it is in the best interests of our community that I step aside and not serve as a distraction," he wrote in the statement.

The College Park community, home to about 35,000 people, will now seek a new mayor in a special election.

It is unclear whether Wojahn is currently in jail with no public mention made of a hearing or the former mayor being released on bond.

The case will likely remain in headlines as Wojahn faces a court battle that could put him behind bars for several years if found guilty of the allegations.
