Democrat Hakeem Jeffries comes out as front runner in race to replace Nancy Pelosi

According to Politico, a private meeting on September 1 may have put Hakeem Jeffries in the running to succeed Nancy Pelosi as leader of the House Democrats.

The Daily Caller reported that, over the summer congressional recess, House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn of South Carolina and Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York, the leader of the House Democratic Caucus, met at Clyburn's office.

Jeffries was motivated to travel to California to meet with Clyburn after learning about California Rep. Adam Schiff's "silent campaign" for the speakership. Clyburn reportedly gave Jeffries' campaign his unequivocal backing during the meeting.

"There's nothing I would ever do to impede the progress of our up-and-coming young Democrats, and I see him as an up-and-coming young Democrat," Clyburn said of Jeffries, according to Politico. "He knows that, I didn't have to tell him that — but I did."

Sen. Dianne Feinstein is a Democrat, and if she leaves before her term ends in 2025, Newsom has promised to appoint a Black woman to the position.

The biggest obstacle to Schiff's House aspirations may eventually be this same sensitivity to the Democratic coalition which Politico outlined in their article.

It's not simply symbolic that a white man was chosen to succeed the first female speaker rather than a Black leader. It's that Reps. Katherine Clark of Massachusetts and Pete Aguilar of California, who combined mirror the makeup of their party — a Black guy, a White woman, and a Latino — are prepared to support Jeffries in his ascent.

Five Thirty Eight estimates that Republicans are presently the favorites to retake the House of Representatives. A week after the midterm elections, leadership changes are anticipated.

Kevin McCarthy, the minority leader, will probably succeed Pelosi as speaker, leaving Jeffries as minority leader.

According to Politico, Pelosi is anticipated to resign from both her leadership position and from Congress if Democrats cannot retain control of the House.
