California Democratic Rep. Ro Khana proposed more work permits for illegal immigrants as a method to address the supply chain shortages in the U.S.
Khana shared the proposal during a Monday interview on MSNBC’s “Jose Diaz-Balart Reports.”
The congressman claimed the move is not about citizenship but addressing immigrant workers paying taxes.
“We’re not talking about a path to citizenship. What we’re saying is people who are in this country, who are working, who are paying taxes, they ought to be able to have a work permit. This is actually what President George W. Bush proposed,” Khana said
“And we need it at a time of supply chain shortages. So we will continue. There are other avenues, you can overrule the parliamentarian, but the House Democrats are committed to having this common-sense reform pass,” he added.
However, Khana’s claim that it’s not about citizenship is not completely accurate.
“We need to include a path to citizenship in BBB to make sure these hardworking community members feel fully invested and have a stake in our American story,” he tweeted on Tuesday.

The issue of supply chain shortages is not due to a lack of worker permits for illegal immigrants. It’s over other issues Biden and Democrats have failed to address nearly a year into his term.
