Americans are hurting because of endless coronavirus shutdowns. Democrats obstructed anything former President Donald Trump tried to pass, and now one of their own is worried about the lack of bipartisan support.
Rep. Jared Golden (D-ME) criticized his party for ramming through $1.9 trillion COVID-19 stimulus bill without more bipartisan support, Breitbart reported. The bill breezed through the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives Saturday morning.
“I guess I would say that I don’t think it was in the best interest of the country,” Golden said. “I think that we have ended up with worse public policy as a result, rather than a more targeted bill that would come out of a bipartisan process.”
Golden thought the bill was wasteful in allocating funds to things already covered by previous relief spending to the exclusion of other causes. Democrats had also tried to cram in a $15 per hour federal minimum wage but were thwarted by a procedural stopgap.
The new bill does include direct payments of $1,400 for individuals earning less than $75,000 annually; $200 million in funding for public schools; payouts to tribal, state, and local governments for $350 billion; and $50 billion for contact tracing, testing, and vaccinations for COVID-19. It also augmented the weekly unemployment benefit to $400, which is a $100 increase from existing relief.
“We need to get more and more targeted as we move forward here so that we have… the resources we need for other critical reforms that the American people also need us to step up and get done,” Golden said. That’s an unusual admission from a Democrat politician.
Prior to President Joe Biden taking office, Pelosi and her ilk blocked dozens of attempts Republicans made to pass relief. After months of dragging her feet on passing more relief, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was eager to get the bill passed to deal with expiring unemployment benefits regardless of whether it received widespread support from her Republican adversaries.
Over and over again, Democrats have BLOCKED Republicans’ attempts to pass a commonsense relief bill that could actually be signed into law to help the American people. It’s time the Democrats show up, get to work, and make a serious effort to help people during the pandemic. pic.twitter.com/0fYddsFOYV

Lost in all of this is the reality that the best thing the government can do for the people hurt by the pandemic is to reopen the country. Handing out free money may make politicians popular and will certainly be a help for some in dire need, but nothing will fundamentally change until people are allowed to get back to work.
