Dem House Rep. Jackie Speier announces she will not seek reelection

California Rep. Jackie Speier has announced she will not seek reelection in 2022, calling for a mandatory retirement for lawmakers at age 75.

Speier made the somewhat controversial remarks during a podcast interview with the San Francisco Chronicle’s “It’s All Political.”

“Maybe putting a ban on how long you can serve,” Speier, who is 71, said. “Not a term limit. An age-limit ban.”

Speaking of House Speaker and fellow California Democrat Nancy Pelosi, Speier said, “Well, she said this would be her last term as speaker.”

Speier added during the podcast. “I think she made a commitment that this would be her last. I don’t know what her plans are. I don’t know if members in the caucus would want to convince her to run again as speaker.”

The suggest rule change would rock the current political field. President Joe Biden is the oldest serving president at 79. Former President Donald Trump is 75.

Pelosi is also beyond 75 years old, as are several leading Democrats in the House and Senate.

The suggestion is unlikely to gain traction politically, though it would make for sweeping changes in Washington.
