Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin tests positive for COVID-19

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin tested positive for COVID-19 on Sunday, according to a statement from the Department of Defense (DOD).

“As my doctor made clear to me, my fully vaccinated status — and the booster I received in early October — have rendered the infection much more mild than it would otherwise have been,” Austin said.

“The vaccines work and will remain a military medical requirement for our workforce. I continue to encourage everyone eligible for a booster shot to get one. This remains a readiness issue,” he added.

Austin said in the statement that his last meeting with President Joe Biden was on Dec. 21, more than a week before he began experiencing symptoms.

The defense secretary’s case is one of a growing number of military cases among those already vaccinated, leading to concerns regarding the spread of the virus regardless of one’s vaccination status.

The latest case also shows another top leader contracting the virus, adding to a growing list of national leaders who have tested positive in recent weeks.
