Defense Department quietly reveals new information about classified document leaks

The Department of Defense trickled out more information on Easter Sunday about leaked classified documents and images making their way around social media, the Daily Wire reported. The "Top Secret" information purportedly pertains to the war in Ukraine.

"The Department of Defense continues to assess the validity of the photographed documents that are circulating on social media sites and that appear to contain sensitive and highly classified material," Pentagon deputy press secretary Sabrina Singh said in a statement. "An interagency effort has been stood up, focused on assessing the impact these photographed documents could have on U.S. national security and on our Allies and partners," she added.

"Over the weekend, U.S. officials have engaged with Allies and partners and have informed relevant congressional committees of jurisdiction about the disclosure." Before this statement Sunday, the official line was that the matter was turned over to the Justice Department with little else offered.

"The Department of Defense's highest priority is the defense of our nation and our national security," Singh admitted. The problem began when these images made their way around the internet in the last few weeks, starting with Discord.

This material, if authentic, was not run-of-the-mill low-level correspondences. To the contrary, some of the images and documents were designated "NOFORN," or "not be released in any form to foreign governments," the Epoch Times reported

Others were marked "Top Secret" and reported the positions of NATO assets like planes, ships, and ground troops in a "daily update." One document outlined four different scenarios for Israel to get involved in the war by providing Ukraine with weapons to use against Russia.

It ranked them from "most plausible" to "least plausible," which could confirm their authenticity. There were also dozens of images, with one showing the destruction of a "recent strike" in Marinka, a city in the Donetsk region of Ukraine, in February 2023.

Another showed the troop locations in that same region. However, one of the most shocking among the other documents was an alleged report of war casualties.

The documents claimed that Russia lost between 16,000 and 17,500 troops while Ukraine's military lost up to 71,500 people. Those figures contradict Western claims that Russia's forces have been the hardest hit in the war.

No agency or expert has sworn to the authenticity of the images and documents nor to the veracity of the information shared within. Some believe they may be doctored or forged altogether.

"Whether these documents are authentic or not, people should take care with anything released by Russian sources," Michael Kofman, the director of Russian studies at the Center of a New American Security, said. The think tank, based outside of Washington, D.C., contracts with the U.S. military and Big Tech heavy hitters like Amazon and Google.

Still, Brandon Van Grack, former "leak czar" at the Justice Department, is worried about what the information has already done to national security regardless of its origins. "The only debate now is how much damage there was and the threat is still live," he told NPR.

"We don't know if the individual or individuals still have access to classified information and whether there could be additional leaks, and so right now, this has to be the top priority." It looks like the Defense Department is attempting to do that with a quiet announcement on the holiest day of the year for Christians.

These could be part of a psyop or an internet hoax as it isn't difficult to falsify documents and photos with today's technology. However, it's increasingly apparent that classified documents are mishandled all of the time by top officials -- including President Joe Biden.
