Damar Hamlin cleared to return to football following cardiac arrest

Buffalo Bills star Damar Hamlin announced Tuesday that he has been cleared to return to football.

Hamlin's return following a cardiac arrest on the field during the second quarter of a Monday Night Football game last season marks an unprecedented comeback story.

The announcement

“He’s seen three additional specialists (in the off-season), most recently on Friday, and they’re all in agreement, it’s not two to one or three to one or anything like that," Bills general manager Brandon Beane said.

“They’re all in lockstep of what this was and that he is cleared, resumed full activity, he is just like anyone else who is coming from an injury or whatever, so he is fully cleared, he’s here, and he is of the mindset, he’s in a great headspace to come back and make his return,” he continued.

The story

Hamlin told reporters his situation on the field was clearly a cardiac arrest following a direct hit.

“The diagnosis of, pretty much, what happened to me was commotio cordis,” Hamlin said.

“It’s a direct blow at a specific point in your heartbeat that causes cardiac arrest,” he said. “Five to seven seconds later, you fall out, and that’s pretty much what everybody’s seen Jan. 2 of this year," he added.

The team's Twitter account noted that Hamlin was working out with the Bills on Tuesday.

"Damar Hamlin is working out with the team today in Buffalo," the Bills account tweeted. "Glad to have you back, 3."

Hamlin previously declined to talk about the cause of his health scare that led to his on-field situation. Some have argued that COVID-19 vaccines were responsible, though no direct evidence has been supplied in connection with the vaccine or boosters.

The Bills defensive player instead credits his faith and the many people who helped him in his return with being a major part of his return to the NFL. His comeback story is still in the works with a highly emotional return expected when he steps onto the playing field again next year.
