Investigative journalist Paul Sperry stated in a social media post on Monday that a "rumor" going around Washington, D.C., about former President Joe Biden.
The rumor suggests who may have been behind the news that President Joe Biden kept a number of classified documents after he left office as then-President Barack Obama's vice president, possibly in violation of the law, according to The Conservative Brief.
Sperry wrote on Twitter: “NEW: Speculation growing on Hill that US Attorney David C. Weiss, the Delaware prosecutor investigating Hunter Biden, may have pressured the sudden ‘discovery’ of Biden’s private, far-flung stash of classified White House materials.”
Sperry, a longtime RealClearInvestigations reporter, held the position of Investors Business Daily's Washington bureau head for a number of years.
It is worthy of note that the rumor spread by Sperry has not yet been backed up by any evidence.
The New York Times reported last week that the U.S. attorney for Delaware, David C. Weiss, is poised to decide whether or not to charge Hunter Biden with crimes related to his actions during his most difficult years.
Investigators have combed through papers relating to his international business transactions and questioned witnesses about them.
Among them is his participation on the board of Burisma, a Ukrainian energy firm run by an oligarch who was being investigated for corruption at the time. Hunter accepted this position as his father, the vice president, was in charge of the Obama administration's policy toward Ukraine at the time.
Investigators have also looked at interactions between Hunter Biden's father and business partners.
“Mr. Weiss is also said to be considering charging Hunter Biden, who has openly acknowledged his years of struggle with drugs and alcohol, with lying on a U.S. government form that he filled out to purchase a handgun in 2018," the Times noted.
"On the form, he answered that he was not using drugs — an assertion that prosecutors might be able to challenge based on his erratic behavior and possible witness accounts of his drug use around that period."
In 2017, then-President Donald Trump appointed Weiss. The initial batch of classified materials was discovered in Biden's hands last November, just before the midterm elections, at the Penn Biden Center, a think tank in Washington, D.C., where the president had a private office. The other two batches were discovered at one of his Delaware homes.
“President Biden’s personal attorneys have followed a process, coordinated with the Archives and the Department of Justice, to review documents at the Penn Biden Center and the President’s Delaware residences,” Sauber noted.
“The President’s personal attorneys conducting the searches do not have active security clearances, so if they identified a document with a classified marking, they stopped and did not review it, and suspended any further search in that box, file or other specific space where the document was found, as appropriate,” he added.
