Senate Republicans are closely awaiting Iowa Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley’s decision whether to run for reelection or retire as they seek to win back the majority in 2022.
The 87-year-old Grassley could run for an eighth six-year term in the midterm elections.
“I’ll be making that decision sometime this fall,” he has repeatedly said so far, according to Fox News.
The current Senate remains in a 50-50 deadlock, with Vice President Kamala Harris serving as a tie-breaking vote.
A reported 34 out of 100 Senate seats will be up for reelection in 2022. Republicans currently hold 20 of the 34 seats.
The GOP will need to hold its ground and add at least one new seat to break the current tie. Many hope Grassley will announce his retirement, offering an opportunity in Iowa.
If Grassley remains, he will likely win once again. The long-term senator won by nearly 25 points in 2016.
