There are still many questions lingering after actor Alec Baldwin accidentally killed one and wounded another with a gun being used on the set of the movie “Rust.” There’s a chance a criminal probe may get to the bottom of it.
New Mexico district attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies “hasn’t ruled out” criminal charges against Baldwin for the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and the wounding of director Joel Souza, Fox News reported. Baldwin was rehearsing a scene with a weapon he thought was unloaded.
“Everything at this point, including criminal charges, is on the table,” Carmack-Altwies, district attorney for New Mexico’s first district, told the New York Times. She predicted it will take weeks to determine whether charges would be filed, but an update was expected Wednesday.
Investigators were trying to determine whether live rounds were loaded into the gun given to Baldwin. The actor was handed the gun to rehears a scene was told it was “cold,” an industry term indicating it was not loaded with bullets or even blanks.
A projectile exited the weapon and struck both Hutchins and Souza, though it has not been publicly stated if it was a live bullet or something else. Though Hutchins succumbed to her wounds, Souza was taken to an area hospital and has since been released.
Fox News obtained a warrant that revealed the presence of several firearms and hundreds of rounds of ammunition on the set that investigators will have to sift through. “There were an enormous amount of bullets on this set, and we need to find out what kinds they were,” Carmack-Altwies said.
The attorney general objected to the term “prop” weapon that some outlets have used to describe the gun that killed Hutchins. “It was a legit gun,” Carmack-Altwies said. “It was an antique, era-appropriate gun,” she explained without saying exactly what type it was.
While some reports stated the crew was using the gun loaded with live rounds for target practice prior to this incident, that has not been confirmed. Though it was an accidental shooting, Baldwin may have to face charges given that he was not only an actor but also a producer. However, so far there are more questions than answers.
