Crime overflows into Minneapolis suburbs as residents grow fearful

Growing crime in Minneapolis suburbs has led to increased fear among residents, according to a new report.

The study revealed that 51 homicides were recorded in 2021 in suburban areas, more than double than just two years earlier.

“A large number of crimes can be a one-person crime wave, particularly in a suburban area with a relatively small population,” Chris Uggen, professor and criminologist at the University of Minnesota told the Star Tribune.

“The numbers then go up, and the fear goes up, but it can still be a relatively small number of people who are actually doing the activities,” he added.

The new report reveals that two years after the George Floyd riots in the city that led to calls for defunding police that law enforcement appears to be needed more than in the past.

The study also shows that the area’s violence is not limited to small parts of the city, but has spread well beyond the traditional regions.
