Court rules against NY congressional map case in GOP victory

A New York judge ruled against Democrat attempts to oppose a new Republican-favored congressional map, offering the GOP a win as midterm elections loom.

The three different Democrat designed maps were ruled illegally designed to favor their party in at least 20 of the state’s 26 districts, according to the ruling.

“What is clear from the testimony of virtually every expert is that at least in the congressional redistricting maps, the drawers packed Republicans into four districts, thus cracking the Republican voters in neighboring districts and virtually guaranteeing Democrats winning 22 seats,” acting Chief Justice Patrick McAllister wrote.

Democrats have already said they will challenge the ruling.

“For the 100th time, this decision is not going to go into effect. As soon as the state appeals, it is stayed automatically by law until that appeal is done,” lawyer Marc Elias tweeted.

The ruling gives Republicans a win for now, but the battle may not be over regarding the future of New York’s congressional map.
